SURVIVING JOB LOSS
It’s never a good time to lose your job. However, the current economic environment has resulted in business closures, downsizing and layoffs for many in our community. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling offers the following tips for surviving a layoff.
• Allow yourself to be upset or even afraid. These are natural reactions. However, if they become intense, seek professional help. Talking things through and hearing another person’s perspective can bring relief and restore your positive outlook.
• Resist the urge to tell your boss what you truly think of him or her. Remember, you may need him or her as a reference for a future job.
• Take advantage of any assistance your workplace offers. Many companies provide placement assistance, job retraining and severance packages. Make sure you are aware of all benefits offered.
• Apply for any applicable government benefits. Your HR representative at work will be a good resource. (read more)
LEARN HOW TO BE A GOOD BOARD MEMBER
There are many reasons why homeowners serve on their board of directors - personal agendas, ego, civic duties, or peer pressure. No matter the reason, serving on the board is not something to be taken lightly.
Board members need to pay attention and be willing to make hard decisions. When you agreed to serve on the board of directors, you accepted certain elements of responsibilities in addition to a commitment of time and accountability to your association. Board members act on behalf of the homeowners so you will want to be the best board member possible because while a smoothly functioning board can be nirvana, a dysfunctional, nit-picking, and micro-managing board can be an association's worst nightmare. In order to have a successful, productive board, you must first see the big picture. You can do this by adhering to the following guidelines: (read more)

- Locate the nearest shelter
- Develop a plan to secure your home. Knowing if your home is in a flood zone can enable you in protecting your assets more effectively. Click on the attached link for more information: http://gisweb.co.palm-beach.fl.us/surge/default.htm
- Make arrangements for individuals with special needs and pets. The county provides a program for people with special needs and services. Click on the attached link for more information: http://www.800helpfla.com/seniors/seniors.html
NEW RULES FOR MANDATING HURRICANE PROTECTION
Florida Legislature amended the Condominium Act 718.113 and 718.155, Florida Statute, to prevent Associations from denying unit owners the right to install shutters and to provide a vehicle by which Associations could mandate hurricane shutters. Under this new Statute the Association may also amend the Declaration to require forms of hurricane protection other than hurricane shutters. This allows Associations to mandate impact glass and other forms of hurricane protection, which may be more suitable for certain windows and doors. As this is new, there are still some questions to be answered. Should you have any questions as to how these changes in Statute can benefit your community please contact your attorney.
